About this object
History of use
Function uncertain; possibly a small carrying cloth. Alan Sawyer suggested it may be Nasca related. The wide range of deep colour dyes on the cotton is quite unusual for any period.
Physical description
Small, striped fabric with 4 selvedges. Yellow, brown, white, blue, red-brown, green and red stripes are repeated 3 times. One colour is completely deteriorated between the red and yellow stripes, exposing the warp threads. The spinning and weaving are very uneven. One third of the fabric, the area of terminal weaving, is very loosely beaten. All selvedges are complete and there are no signs of sewing to another fabric. Z-spun, 2 plied s yarns.
