Biography

Joe David was born in the Tla-o-qui-aht village of Opitsaht, on Meares Island. Although, he spent much of his childhood in Seattle, he maintained strong connections with his Nuu-chah-nulth heritage. In the 1960's, after attending art school and working as a commercial artist, Joe began to work within Northwest Coast art traditions. In the early 1970's, he attended Bill Holm's classes at the University of Washington and apprenticed to Duane Pasco. As well as, setting the standard of innovation in Westcoast design, Joe also carves in a variety of areal styles, especially Tsimshian. A one man show of Joe David's work was held at MOA in 1978.
