Biography

Kipa Gaindimi is a master carver originally from Yentchen Village in the Middle Sepik, now living in Kambot Village. Gaindimi is particularly renowned for his carvings on bark. His deeply sculptural storyboards continue to evolve, often relating to daily life in the village, such as the harvest and preparation of sago. His works also play an important role in reinforcing the culture by maintaining a visual presence of mythical heroes and stories of creation. He also carves very fine model canoes and the traditional ancestral figures from Kambot village featuring mothers and children. His work is found in international collections in Australia, Canada and the United States, including the William Woods University, St. Louis, Missouri, and The Museum of World Cultures, Frankfurt, Germany.
