Biography

Born Kawamura Tokitaro (川村時太郎) in in Edo (present-day Tokyo), Katsushika Hokusai (葛飾北斎) was a leading artist and printmaker from the later Edo period (1603-1868). Hokusai is best known as creator of the woodblock print series "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji," which includes the internationally recognized print, "The Great Wave off Kanagawa". Hokusai was known by many names (approx. 30) during his lifetime, including Fusenkyo Iitsu.
