Biography

After boarding school in England, 6 years in the armed forces (during and after WWII) and completing her studies at St. Martin's School of Art, Stewart followed her brother to Canada in 1951. She worked as an artist for CHEK TV, before embarking upon a career as an artist and writer about art and artifacts of the First Nations peoples of the Pacific Northwest. She won many awards for her 11 books, with "Looking at Indian Art of the Northwest Coast" (1979) and "Cedar" (1984) being the most well-known. She had a long association with the Archaeological Society of BC and lived her last 35 years on Quadra Island.
