About this object
Narrative
This spoon is almost identical to a spoon in the CMH (VII-C-371), though this example has more patina and wear. It is also very similar to a multi-figural spoon in the collection of the MOV (AA 777). The carving and painting style are diagnostically Elwitt, with the presence of the small raptor figure, face paint on the human figure, and whiskers painted on the otter figure. Like most of Elwitt’s work, it is carved in maple and painted with natural black pigment.
Physical description
Spoon with shallow scoop and long narow handle. The handle is carved with three Northwest Coast figures that are, from scoop upward, an inverted land otter, a human, and a bird (eagle or owl?).
