History of use

Used for thousands of years by Indigenous peoples in the interior plateau region of BC. The ladders were used to access the interior of a pit-house, through an opening in the roof.

Physical description

Wooden pit-house ladder. Large plank of wood, with five cutout notches, creating six steps. The bottom end tapers slightly, and has long notches cutout of each side. The first step is 46 cm from the bottom. Above the sixth step is a long flat area.
