Iconographic meaning
This is part of a frieze that would have run around the top of a stove. The date 1558 is inscribed over the two figures surrounded by decorative foliage.

Physical description
Rectangular green earthenware frieze tile with incurving horizontal front and a ridge on bottom rim. On the front is a relief scene with two grotesques in centre facing outwards, with "1558" inscribed above, flanked by scrolled leaves and branches. Unglazed sides and back.
