About this object
Narrative
Also noted by collector that the tankard could be from Annaberg (Austria?).
Cultural context
functional; decorative
Iconographic meaning
The central medallion of this hunting stein is decorated with a portrait of a female bust, which is flanked by two stags and a bear hunt on a background of scales. Busts were very popular as they portrayed members of the nobility. However, the region of Annaberg, which was rich in forests and game, was a favourite hunting ground for the aristocracy, and it was this pastime rather than the portrayal of nobility that supplied the name of the décor type.
