Iconographic meaning
Portrait of Ferdinand I (1503–1564) wearing the Order of the Golden Fleece and holding the combined coats of arms of Austria and Bohemia. On another side of the tile there is a partial portrait of his wife, Anna of Hungary (1503–1547), with the coat of arms of Hungary. Anna was the sister of Louis II of Hungary whose wife was the sister of Ferdinand. After Louis died (in 1526), Ferdinand laid claim to the Hungarian throne by right of these marriages. The two portraits were probably taken from a 1526 woodcut by Erhard Schön (1486–1542), a well-known artist in Nurnberg.
