History of use
Silverwork among the Haida developed after silver and gold coins were introduced through trade with Europeans. Coins were hammered and engraved with traditional crest designs, and later with a variety of motifs. Silver jewellery was made as wealth items, as well as, for trade.
Narrative
Collected by Barnabas Courtland Freeman between 1893 and 1903.
Physical description
Silver engraved, cutout brooch depicting the American eagle. The wings are partially extended, the head is facing the right. Pin clasp welded onto an undecorated back. Horizontal and vertical line engraving for feathers; eye, mouth markings; unmarked breast.
