History of use
Silverwork among the Haida developed after the introduction of gold and silver coins through trade with Europeans. Coins were hammered and engraved with traditional crest designs, and later with various motifs. Silver jewellery was made both as wealth items and for trade.
Narrative
Collected by Barnabas Courtland Freeman between 1893 and 1903.
Physical description
Silver brooch, engraved with bear design on front, metal pin fastening soldered onto back. Long oval shape, slightly convex to breast of wearer.
