mola (Blouse Panel)

Physical description

Reverse applique cotton panel (mola). A black rectangle of cotton is cut into dense, intricate linear designs and delicately sewn onto a sheer piece of orange fabric of similar size, allowing the orange to show through the black to create the image of two standing, long beaked birds. The heads of the creatures are stitched with a variety of coloured threads in concentric circles and lines. The feet are similarly stitched. Eyes are white and red pieces of padded fabric. Artist’s name and place of creation are written in ink on reverse.
