Tankard

Cobalt-blue glaze is typical of pottery from Westerwald; this glaze was introduced by a Belgian potter, Jan Emens Mennicken, who worked in the pottery workshops in Raeren, in Germany (now Belgium), between 1568 and 1594.

Grey stoneware tankard, ridged cylindrical shape, slightly convex base, tapered neck, flat pewter lid with high knob hinged at top of loop handle. Dark blue lines between ridges on body, central broad blue band with applied grey flowers.
