Northwest Coast basketry is among the world's finest and most varied. Haida baskets are generally cylindrical shapes with geometric designs.

Physical description

Plain twined cylindrical, straight-sided spruce root basket base (a) with knobbed, slope topped lid (b). Patterning on light white-brown ground includes grey alternating circle on bottom around centre with white-brown check for six rows around middle of bottom. The sides have three rows of diagonal brown elements on either side of a green grass twined overlaid meander. The lid has three rows of white-brown check, two plain rows and three checked rows, then brown and white-brown check for three rows, seven plain rows, two rows of brown check, two rows of brown and white-brown check, then solid white-brown to top of the knob. The lid is straight-sided with twill (?) twining at the edges, and at the bottom edge of the basket base as well.
