Iconographic meaning
This image of a spouting whale or some other sea creature belonged to the repertoire of designs found on Delft tiles and tableware. Other subjects included ships, sea monsters, mermaids, and Tritons. Less expensive Delftware with simple sketch-like motifs were produced in the eighteenth century.

Physical description
Circular earthenware plate on a flat base with an everted rim. In the well centre is a spouting whale with its tail in the air. Around the rim alternate two designs: blue cross and four red dots with a blue zigzag on green ground. Blue, purple, green and red on blue-white ground.
