Narrative

Rosita Tovell's father was a collector of Peruvian pre-Columbian ceramics. Rosita moved to Peru in the early 1960s, while her husband served as ambassador to Peru and Bolivia. During this time Rosita began to study and collect pre-Columbian Peruvian ceramics and textiles.

Physical description

Polychrome vessel with thin spout, rounded base, lenticular body and everted rim. Two whale deity designs are painted in vessel body with proliferous heads and a trophy head hanging from their mouths. Inner red-brown rim has five white profile birds with black dots in the interior and white dots between them. Painted in cream, grey, red-brown, orange-brown, light yellow, dark grey and black. Molded manufacture; polished surface. Breakage repaired.
