sokbaji (Outer Underwear)

About this object

History of use

Such underwear, which matched the outer garments in the case of formal wear, was worn as the outermost layer of underpants under the under-skirt. The colour matches the garments as the underwear could sometimes be seen when the wearer was seated. Pants made in this style are comfortable, and when made of ordinary fabric could be worn while working at home.

Iconographic meaning

The flowers are symbols of fortune and joy.

Specific techniques

Made entirely with fine machine sewing. Seams were stitched once, then folded over and stitched flat.

Physical description

Pink damask outer, underpants (part d). The underpants have an elastic waistband, centre gusset and ankle-length pant legs. The inner leg seam of the legs forms a wide convex curve, curving inward to the narrow ankle opening. The damask is woven containing a floral bouquet motif. The inside is unlined.
