Basketry

Physical description

Rectangular glass bottle with lid covered by finely woven basketry. The bottle (part a) is tall, wider than deep, with a sloping shoulder and a tall, thin neck. The basketry covers the bottle from base to neck, leaving the mouth free for attaching the lid. Dyed into the grass on one long side is a bird perched on a flowering branch, surrounded by whales in each corner. The opposite side shows a large bird with wings spread, perched on a whale. These are also surrounded by whales in each corner. One short side shows three figures in a boat with whales above and below. The opposite shows three whales. Dyed trim runs around shoulders and base. The bottom is a checked pattern in natural, red and purple dyes. The lid (part b) is plastic, and covered on the outside with weaving. It flares out toward its top and is decorated around the centre by pink triangles. The top has circular decorations in brown and orange tones.
