Cultural context

Formal costume, nu mang, for a wife of a high ranking man. It is of various colors, but a red one is worn by a young lady.

Physical description

Red robe with a rounded neck, slender sleeves, hoof cuffs and side opening with metal frog closures. There are slits in the centre front and back. On the front, back and sleeves are five-toed dragon, bat, wave, mountain, cloud, pair of circular and rectangular ornaments, ruyi sceptre and peony motifs and the eight Buddhist symbols of good fortune. The motifs are red, yellow, green, blue and gold on red ground. The inside lining is blue silk.
