The inscription IVL, to the right of his helmet’s plume, indicates this is an image of Julius Caesar (100–44 BCE), the Roman emperor credited with the rise of the Roman Empire. He was undoubtedly both a magnificent military commander and political tactician, yet perhaps he is equally famous for his relationship with the Egyptian queen Cleopatra and for his assassination, on the Ides of March, at the hands of twenty-three members of the senate.
