Iconographic meaning
The arms are those of the Palatinate: a gold lion with a red crown, tongue, and claws on a black field. The design is quartered with the ancient arms of the Wittlesbacks, Dukes, and ultimately Kings of Bavaria—paly bendy argent (silver) and azure (blue). This tile may have come from a stove in one of the Palatinate palaces.
