Knife Carving
About this object
History of use
Until recently, art did not play a central role in the life of the Eskimos. The arrival of the white man in the arctic meant a demand for souvenirs. Contemporary Eskimo carving first emerged in 1948/49 and it continues today. The subject matter is usually figurines of traditional Eskimos and the animals with which they were familiar.
