uncuna (Carrying Cloth)

The uncuna is used by women for carrying a baby or a burden. The tradition of regionally distinctive dress is still a feature of some of the remote villages of highland Peru. The costumes are a mixture of Spanish influence with surviving indigenous aspects and materials.

Carrying cloth of warp faced plain weave with aniline dyed stripes (red, blue, yellow, green, purple, and black) interspaced with grey bands and strips of pick up weave in a rose design (red and green, or red and blue alternating on a yellow background). The outside side edges are finished with a woven band with a multi-coloured diamond design.
