About this object

Narrative

Possibly from the Red River area in Manitoba; the upper design appears to be Metis in style, wheres the lower design is thought to be Cree?. Diane Anderson purchased the bag from a gallery in Ontario in 1993.

Physical description

Beaded panel bag. Bag is rectangular in shape, rounded on top corners, with a braided green and blue wool handle attached to the interior edge. The top half, front and back, has a black stroud background covered in beading in a large floral pattern in pink, blue, red and tan glass beads. A dark orange silk-like fabric lines the edges, along with rows of white beads. The interior is lined with black fabric at top, and a light floral pattern deeper in the bag. The lower exterior is a panel made entirely of beads (woven on a loom), in a floral design on white, with a green border. Wool tassels hang from bottom and sides of the panel, attached to blue and white beads.
