Narrative

According to a note glued to the base of the carving, the prow was "Taken from the canoe "Sea Wolf" used by the Cowichan of Green Point. The canoe was said to have originally been obtained "in barter from the [Haida] of Skidegate."

Iconographic meaning

The figure is said to represent Wasgo, the mythical sea wolf. Animals and mythical beings who dwell in the sea are often associated with wealth on the Pacific Northwest coast.

Physical description

Carved wooden figure depicting a mythical sea wolf. The figure sits upon a small base. It has a wolf's head with prominent nostrils and bared teeth and small ears that extend backwards above the eyes. Below the head are two coils of a serpent's body. The serpent's body has incised cross-hatch designs and larger painted diamond markings. Black, red, and orange paint accentuate these designs.
