Kundu Drum

Collected from Asei village, Lake Sentani by Dr. John Moore while working for the Eastern Indonesia University Development project, which was run cooperatively between Simon Fraser University in Canada and Cenderawasih in West Papua.

Tall, thin drum. The hollow wooden body is carved into an hour glass shape, with a small waist above midpoint and both ends flaring outward. The surface has carved designs of slightly raised swirls and scalloped lines on the bottom area, and repeating motifs of gently curving lines in the upper area. The handle takes the shape of a human figure that clings with hands and feet to the side of the drum, head turned to the right. The reptile skin cover is mottled brown and grey. Interior walls are black with charcoal.
