Iconographic meaning

Phulkari embroidery is a rural tradition of handmade embroidery, literally meaning "flower work". This piece has been said to have a Kashmiri style of embroidery. The main characteristics of phulkari embroidery are the use of a darn stitch on the wrong side of cotton cloth using coloured silken thread. It is a regional embroidery style practiced throughout the Punjab, both in India and in Pakistan, as well as in neighboring regions.

Physical description

Long, rectangular textile with a repeating, stylized, floral design in yellow, green, black and white on a red ground. One long border is decorated with larger flowers of same colours. The border is lined with light green fabric.
