History of use

This cloth wrapper, embroidered by women, is used by some of the peasant people of Gujarat, northwestern India, for carrying money, keys, mirrors, or other valuable articles. Rectangular band is folded over object to provide protection. Used as a wrapper for storage and/or a carrying case while travelling.

Physical description

Small black textile divided by rows of orange and white embroidery into four rectangular sections, each embroidered in stylized designs. Background is embroidered in round flower-like forms, centre of each set with mirrors. Chain and buttonhole stitch used extensively. Design is in orange, red, green, white, and blue cotton embroidery thread. Machine-made.
