Narrative
The set was originally purchased by a previous owner in Toronto. In Feb. 2024 the donors purchased the set from the previous owner, in a silent auction benefit.
Iconographic meaning
The glimmering sun indicates the return of spring, and the caribou is thought to represent the woman's dreams of more rewarding game in the next season. This print is also interpreted as an autobiographical reference, with Kalvak alluding to the plight of a woman alone on the land.
Physical description
Stencil print of a woman kneeling in a skin tent, with her boots drying outside it; done in horizontal orientation on off-white paper. Woman is wearing a hooded blue parka with yellow trim, brown pants, and grey mittens; she has a small fish and ulu at her side. Skins tent is made out of are grey, red, green, purple, blue, and brown; black rocks along base of tent, and large caribou head mounted on top. Small, bright pink sun setting in background. Title, Waiting/Otakivok, edition number, 14/55, and artist and printer names, Kalvak/M. Nigiyok, written in pencil along bottom edge of print. Holman Eskimo Co-Operative stamp blind embossed in bottom right corner; Arches France, the paper manufacturer, stamp blind embossed in bottom left corner.
