Narrative
The set was originally purchased by a previous owner in Toronto. In Feb. 2024 the donors purchased the set from the previous owner, in a silent auction benefit.
Physical description
Stonecut print of two figures fishing from kayaks with an irregularly-shaped border around them; done in dark brown ink. Print is in horizontal orientation on off-white paper. Figures are wearing hooded parkas and have their kayaks side by side, facing one another. Kayaks are lashed together at stern and bow; one paddle connecting kayaks together at centre, in front of fishermen. Each figure has a hand held fishing line, attached to a grooved stick for wrapping the line around. Fisherman closest to bottom edge also has a small spear tied to the side of their kayak. Three large fish are around the kayaks, inside the irregularly-shaped border; bird flies outside border, hovering over one of the fish as it jumps. Artist signature to bottom right of design. Title, Summer Fishing/Aoyami Ikalikivok, edition number 14/55, and artist and printer names, Emerak/L. Nigiyok, written in pencil along bottom edge of print. Holman Eskimo Co-Operative stamp blind embossed in bottom right corner.
