History of use

Baskets of this size were originally said to be made for ointments, e.g., ointments used by whalers for windburn.

Physical description

A small slightly upward flared cylindrical light brown basket (part a) with lid (part b). The basket (part a) is woven with "UCLUELET. BC." in purple and a bird with a green head and purple wings outstretched. Three horizontal rows of red, green, and red go around the bottom of the basket. The side of the basket tapers into an upright rim. The lid (part b) is a flat circle with a red, green, and purple swirl design on top, a purple edge, and three horizontal rows of red, green, and red around the sides.
