History of use

The nagajuban (長襦袢), or full-length kimono underwear is worn over hadajuban (肌襦袢), a half-length first layer underwear and susoyoke (裾除け) underclothes. Worn by women.

Narrative

Kimono set acquired by donor in 1970, while she was involved with missionaries in the village of Ueda; she wore the kimono for special cermemonies while residing in Japan.

Physical description

Nagajuban (長襦袢) is a full-length kimono underwear. This nagajuban has a date eri (伊達襟, detachable collar) hand-sewn onto it. Ivory-coloured lightweight robe has a blue and red floral collar stitched on, and a patterned fabric sash, stitched on at the back.
