It was likely this figure was made for foreigners to display as an example of Japanese art.

Iconographic meaning

The length of the figure’s sleeves indicate she is young and unmarried. They would hang down below her waist if she had not tucked them into her sash. Her style of clothing is meant to show she is a woman used to physical labour.

Physical description

Figure of a female woodcutter on wooden base wearing a short kimono, decorated with gold flowers (part a). Wearing straw sandals, floral head wrap, brown leg wrappings and has wooden pack frame on back. Holding a hatchet (part b).
