Narrative

This print by Adachi Ginkō (安達吟光) is titled Mi – Taira no shigemori ouchi ni hebi wo tsukamu, (巳)平重盛大内に蛇を捕ふ (Snake: Taira no Shigemori holding a snake) and is from the series Rekishi-e (歴史絵; History Pictures) originally published in 1896. This series of prints contains twelve scenes of legendary Japanese warriors or heroes, each linked to one of the zodiac animals. This print is linked to the snake. The title appears on the right margin; his seal in red is closer to the right corner. The publication date is listed on the left as September 15, Meiji period year 29 (1896) (明治廿九年九月十五日) and published by Hasegawa Toshihide (長谷川壽英).

Physical description

Print called, "Taira no Shigemori holding a snake". Two men, one on the steps and one kneeling in front. The man on the steps is wearing clothing with a purple diamond pattern, and is looking down at the man kneeling in front of him who is wearing clothing that is white and blue. The steps are brown and there are seven of them with a white building behind. A tree is in front of the steps in the lower right with petals falling from the pink blossoms. A hill with three green trees is behind on the left side. In the lower right corner, there is a vertically rectangular, red seal. Along the sides are pink and brown characters. The print is horizontally rectangular.
