History of use

Lacquer (urushi) is refined sap from the lacquer tree. Most commonly used to coat wood objects is also used on a variety of other materials like leather, paper, cloth, and pottery.

Physical description

Barrel-shaped with rounded corners. Dark brown sides with yellowed transparent top and bottom. Lid (b) has gold-painted design of peacock flying over water; islands, grass, and rocks with mountains in background. Large whitish area upper right. Sides fit over base (a); the two longest have one centred notch each at rim.
