Flute

Physical description

Carved argillite flute with a tapered mouthpiece that holds a wooden reed and an outturned, bell shaped bottom. Decorated along the top of the instrument are four figures carved in relief. From top to bottom: human with his mouth open wide and his arms over his chest; frog with three drilled holes down its body and countless incised ‘dots’ for detail; frog with three drilled holes down its body and countless incised ‘dots’ for detail; eagle with a raised head, abalone inlaid eyes, incised detailed wings along with an ivory head and tail. The underside is carved with a killer whale and dogfish ? . The negative space is filled with fine crosshatching.
