About this object

History of use

This basket comes from a village in Sumatra with a three hundred year old tradition for making fine baskets. Almost one third of the village population was engaged in basket making on a part-time basis, while a small number were full time basket makers (collector's notes).

Physical description

Basket of light-coloured rattan, in a trumpet-like shape, with light brown strips of bamboo running vertically from the light, wooden edge at the top to a mahogany (?) base. Two natural coloured handles are attached around the centre.
