About this object

History of use

This necklace is a good example of traditional ornaments which are still, to some extent, found in Arunachal Pradesh. Women traditionally made ornaments for themselves with plastic, glass, and base metal ornaments replacing natural fibres, to a great extent. These are worn as part of everyday dress (collector's notes).

Cultural context

worn by women

Physical description

A grass necklace consists of four chains of small circles of braided grass. At each end, the chains are combined to form two short ends. These are finished by tying on two, 3.5cm. long strings of multi-coloured glass (?) and metal (?) beads strung on a fine twined piece of grass to form the neck ties.
