Narrative

Collected by Allice Legat in 1977 while she was doing field work in Afghanistan. The dress was made in the United States, probably by a home sewer, and sent to Afghanistan as part of an aid parcel. It is not known how it may have found its way to the marketplace or to an individual wearer.

Physical description

Home sewn woman’s western-style dress, made of purple polyester double knit textile. Round neckline finished with a facing. Set-in long sleeves; cuffs at wrist closed by plastic buttons (three on the right cuff, two on the left). Bust darts in front; vertical darts at the waist in back. Plastic coil zipper at centre back; slightly A-line.
