History of use

Worn on the head for warmth, usually topped by a sombrero. When a sombrero is worn the watanas hang loosely and the buttons on the ear flaps create a decorative impression.

Physical description

Woven, wool hat, conical in shape with two long rectangular ties. The body of the hat is detailed with a red geometric pattern with stripes of orange, brown, red and burgundy on a light brown ground. There are two triangular earflaps decorated with cream buttons bordered on each side with small white beads. Both of the ties are bordered with small white, blue, yellow and pink beads. There is a fuchsia tassel on the top.
