Reid would sweep the filings from his metalwork into the strainer. He would then heat the strainer causing the impurities to fall through the holes. The resulting metal would be sent elsewhere for refining.
Physical description
Short cylinder with many small holes punched through one side of the bottom, and solid on other half. The surface of the strainer is painted black. Metal shavings(?) appear to be stuck to the strainer side of bottom.
