About this object


The donor said the objects were originally collected by Col. James Peters, RCN, who came to Victoria as a Major in the Navy in 1887. Peters lived for many years in Esquimault. According to the family history, Peters had also been to the Queen Charlotte Islands in the 1880s?

Physical description

Carved wooden totem pole depicting figures from top to bottom: bear bird transformation figure, seal, frogs, winged human-like creature, a row of three frogs, killer whale/frog transformation figure(?), Wasgo and bear with a human in its mouth and faces in its paws (bear cubs?). The pole is painted red and black with stylized designs. Rear of pole is concave.
