About this object

History of use

Basketry filled a vital need as containers for storage domestic use and transportation of goods. Some had multiple uses; others were made for specific functions. After European contact, used for trade and sale items. Forms have been altered to meet European tastes. Basketry making was and is a women's art.

Specific techniques

Walls and base is 2 ply plain twining z-twist with warp radiating from central point. The top 6 cm. of the basket is decorated with ten rows of 2 ply plain twining alternating with ten rows of 3 ply twining z-twist. Border is 3 ply s-twist twining with warp cut off.

Physical description

Tightly woven, large cylindrical basket. Braided rim with warps cut off. Top of basket has natural brown decorative band, approximately 6cm. wide with ten rows of raised stitches alternating with ten rows of plain weave. Remainder of basket is decorated with four bands of light red-brown approximately 2cm. wide alternating with brown bands.
