History of use

Basketry filled a vital need as containers for storage domestic use and transportation of goods. Some had multiple uses; others were made for specific functions. After European contact, used for trade and sale items. Forms have been altered to meet European tastes. Basketry making was and is a women's art.

Specific techniques

2 ply z-twist twining, strawberry weave profile. Lid spiral design and two bands of two rows each are of twill twining. Edge finished with 3 ply twining, s -twist.

Physical description

Circular basket with wide flaring rim and vertical inner rim between which the lid rests. Base has warps radiating from centre point. Design consists of two concentric bands of pink and blue each with coloured wefts alternating with light brown wefts. Walls have a twill twining diagonal v pattern extending to the flaring rim. Outer band of flaring rim decoration with light brown and purple twining alternating to form vertical and diagonal lines. Edge of rim braided with warps cut off. Inside vertical rim is plain twining in light brown, edge finished the same. Circular lid with knob handle woven with alternating light brown and purple wefts. Wall of lid is decorated with two rows of twill twining. Top is decorated with band of red and purple and three twill twined spirals radiating from knob to colour band.
