About this object

Narrative

The Durham-Aldridges were living in Nigeria from 1961-63, in Enugu. On the back of the painting is handwritten "Port Harcourt area". Port Harcourt is south of Enugu, near the southern coast of Nigeria.

Physical description

Small colourful painting of a Nigerian river scene. The scene shows three figures--one carrying a load, one fishing and one in the river. In the foreground are two houses beside a wide river with a palm tree at the left and a twisted deciduous tree at the right, with vines hanging from its upper braches. Trees are also visible in the background, on the far bank of the river. The painting is signed in the lower right "H.Moukoko" and has a wide off-white painted border on four edges that also covers the sides. The canvas is stretched tightly over a thin wooden frame and nailed around the side edges.
