History of use

Basketry filled a vital need as containers for storage domestic use and transportation of goods. Some had multiple uses; others were made for specific functions. After European contact, used for trade and sale items. Forms have been altered to meet European tastes. Basketry making was and is a women's art.

Specific techniques

2 ply plain twining with a z-twist. The rim and edge of base is in 3 ply plain twining with z-twist.

Physical description

Basket woven in spruce root, oval as viewed from the top, with side walls that flare outwards towards the rim. A thick band of alternating rows of green and natural root extends around the centre of the sides. The rim is constructed of three-ply twining with the warps cut off. There is a reinforcing row of weaving at the point where the base meets the body. The base has a centre panel in plain twining, and both rounded ends have warps radiating from two central points with the untrimmed ends projecting.
