About this object

History of use

Wood-working (carving) knife

Narrative

Bill Reid inherited these knives (A7038, A7039, A7040) from his grandfather, Charles Gladstone, in Skidegate. Reid believed they originally came from Charles Edenshaw because Gladstone had inherited Edenshaw's tools.

Physical description

Carving knife with a wooden handle and a double edged, triangular shaped, metal blade, bound together with copper wire. The blade has a wide base, a slightly concaved tip and is inserted into a carved groove in the handle. The handle is a flattened, cylindrical shape and is slightly concaved. A piece of copper, holding the end of the wrapped wire, is nailed into the wood to help keep the wire attached.
