Made for the tourist market.

Narrative

Drake was given the carving by Leonard Wood as a token of appreciation. Wood acquired it from Ellen Neel in 1957, during a visit to her house. The donor used it as a letter opener.

Physical description

Small wooden paddle, with a painted bird head design. Tip of letter opener is painted red with red cross-hatching at the other end; handle and reverse side are unpainted. Artist signature and date on the back.
