History of use

Tibetan style woodblock, for printing on textiles or paper. In this case, possibly for mass printing of prayer flags?

Iconographic meaning

Woodblock carving of the Bodhisattva Sahasrabhujalokeśvara, the 11-faced and 1000-armed form of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, standing on a lotus; on the right side is another Bodhisattva figure (Tara?) and on the left side is an unidentified Dharma protector.

Physical description

A large, rectangular press wood print block. Carved image depicts a many armed Bodhisattva figure with a tall cylindrical, stepped headdress, on a lotus, surrounded by halos, plants, clouds and other ornaments. On the right is another Bodhisattva figure sitting cross-legged, with a protector figure surrounded by fire sitting on the other side. There are two figures wearing robes with curled edges, one at each top corner. A large horizontal row of Tibetan characters is at the top and a smaller horizontal row of Tibetan characters is at the bottom.
